Before we get into it, let’s take a walk down memory lane. We’ll take a look at what Feather is, how we got to where we are today, and where we’re headed!
Feather History:
After the seventh move in his nine years of living in New York City, Jay Reno thought “there has to be a better way”. Whether he was living with multiple roommates, a significant other, or by himself, each move demanded a different set of furniture needs and he was exhausted. At the time, he didn’t realize his moving habits were actually completely normal. Between the ages of 18 and 35, people move an average of 12 times.
In seeking to reduce waste, avoid the cost and commitment of ownership, but still get great designs, Jay began toying with the notion of an upscale furniture rental service. Voilà! Feather was born.
Alongside Jacob Malone and Jeffery Schwartz, the boys started Feather out of Jay’s Brooklyn apartment on March 20th, 2017. How do three men whose names begin with the letter J start a furniture rental company out of a New York City apartment? Yes, the semantics are difficult to wrap your head around and it was indeed as chaotic as it sounds
Behind the scenes:
Just 2 months after Feather’s birth date, the boys (plus dog) get down and dirty assembling furniture in preparation for their first delivery.
In March 2019 in the heart of SOHO, Feather got a new nest to call home. Internally, this location was referred to as “The Aviary.”
In 2020, the world was upended by the COVID-19 pandemic and Feather was no exception to the wide-reaching impacts. Operationally, company offerings were reworked to ensure the safety of our customers and ground teams. Internally, The Aviary closed its doors for good and Feather was declared a remote-forward company.
Looking Forward:
While having overcome many of the trials and tribulations posed by COVID-19, Feather took a step back to face a new post-pandemic reality. We’ve looked inwards, and are making changes ensuring we are more aligned with our mission and primarily, serving you, our customer.
This isn’t just another rental company. We’re elevating the future of furniture by replacing the commitment of ownership with a culture of sharing in a way that’s curated, convenient, and sustainable.
